Eutectic growth in Sr modified Al-13%Si alloy under unidirectional solidification

摘要
Al-Si castings have attracted tremendous research interest due to their wide application in the automobile industry. The effects of strontium addition, growth velocity and temperature gradient on eutectic growth in Al-13%Si alloy under unidirectional solidification condition are reported. Microstructural analysis revealed that the morphology of eutectic grains (such as plane front, cells and cellular/columnar and equiaxed dendrites) can be controlled by adjusting Sr addition, growth velocity and temperature gradient. Qualitatively, an increase in temperature gradient and/or reductions in growth velocity and Sr addition are beneficial for stabilising plane front eutectic growth. Experimental observations can be explained in the light of a constitutional supercooling criterion for stability of eutectic growth in polyphase alloy.
