Behaviour of Winged PVD and the Method for Calculating Its Induced Degree of Consolidation

摘要
To reduce the obstacle effect of apparent clogging around prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) in vacuum consolidation projects, a method of using a new type PVD, winged-PVD (WPVD) was investigated. First, a new structure of WPVD has been proposed, which is easier to be manufactured and installed into the field. Then the results of finite element analysis (FEA) and laboratory model tests indicate that WPVDs have higher capacity of accelerating the rate of a vacuum consolidation than that of ordinary PVDs, because they can mitigate the effect of apparent clogging. Finally, an explicit method (equation) for calculating a WPVD induced degree of consolidation has been established using equivalent drain diameter concept. The method has been validated by both the results of FEA and laboratory model tests.
