Preliminary trigonometric parallaxes are presented for 12 cool dwarfs and brown dwarfs with spectral types ranging from M9.5V to L8V. Optical (V,R-c,I-c,z*) and near-IR (J,H,K) photometry determined at USNOFS are also presented for the same objects as well as for an additional 4 L-dwarfs for which astrometry is not yet available. Sample relationships between spectral type, colors, and absolute magnitude are displayed. The I-J color is found to become progressively redder throughout the L-dwarf regime and as far as Gliese 229B, the well-studied methane (T type) dwarf. The latest L-dwarf in this sample (2MW1632+19, at L8V) is found to be only similar to 0.8 mag more luminous than Gl229B in M-J.
