A multi-junction radial thermocouple (MRT) installed on blast furnace No. I at the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Combine in 2004 was used to evaluate the performance of the gas flow in the furnace over the course of 2005. Studies were made of the relationship between the coefficient that characterizes the nonuniformity of the work done by the gas flow K-p/c (the ratio of the temperature in the peripheral zone to the temperature in the central zone) and the main indices of the smelting operation. Calculations showed that K-p/c needs to approach unity for the performance of the furnace to have improved during the indicated period. It was also determined that an MRT can be used to detect momentary openings in the stock in local regions that undergo a significant rise in temperature.
