摘要
It is now apparent that hepatocellular carcinoma is occurring with increasing frequency in the USA. This mirrors a trend that occurred in Japan approximately 10 years earlier. Although the approach to diagnosis and treatment are similar in Japan and the USA, there are some differences. Thus, imaging is the primary modality of diagnosis and computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are favored over ultrasound. Liver transplantation is an important modality of therapy, which is associated with excellent survival and, with the introduction of the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) system, there has been a sharp rise in liver transplants performed for hepatocellular carcinoma since 2002.
