Manganese removal from water by magnesium enriched kaolinite-bentonite ceramics

摘要
Manganese is frequently present at elevated concentrations in both surface and groundwater. In addition, manganese is a health hazard, highly soluble over a wide pH range and difficult to remove from the contaminated waters. It was observed that during the interaction of Mg-enriched kaolinite-bentonite ceramics (2 wt% of Mg and Al surplus each) prepared in this work, with manganese aqueous solutions (530 mu g L-1 -530 mg L-1 of Mn(II)) the manganese concentration decreases. It appears that these changes of metal concentration are on account of manganese deposition on the ceramics surface. The interaction of the ceramic samples prepared at 800 degrees C with the manganese aqueous solutions for 24 h reduced manganese concentration up to 80%.
