摘要
The main purpose of the study reported in this paper was to determine Filipino college students' (n=336) positive and negative beliefs about mathematics and mathematical problem solving by administering the 36-item (six scales) self-report questionnaire through stratified random sampling. The study was also aimed at analysing possible significant differences in mathematics-related beliefs related to gender, year level, and field of specialization. Using correlations, t tests and multiple analysis of variance, results showed positive beliefs that Filipino students valued effort in increasing one's mathematical ability and considered mathematics as useful in their daily lives. On the contrary, Filipino students believed that all word problems can be solved by simple step by step procedure and word problems are not important. Statistical tests revealed that gender difference in positive beliefs that effort can increase mathematical ability and in the usefulness of mathematics is significant. This gender difference in the beliefs mentioned reflected also in all year levels and in various field of specializations. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
