摘要
Although lead tungstate is reportedly intrinsically radiation resistant, most samples tested in the past two years for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter exhibited variable and often severe low dose radiation damage. To resolve this problem, an R&D effort has been undertaken by CMS and the producers. Besides improving the control of the raw materials and the stoichiometry ratio, the R&D effort explored two avenues: doping and oxygen annealing of the crystals.
