Gradient foam core materials for sandwich structures: Preparation and characterisation

摘要
A method of combining layers of different low density rigid foam core materials is presented. The core materials, interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on PVC and polyurea, are fused together in a precursor stage. It is shown that it is possible to join the different core materials, keeping their nominal density and maintaining an overlapping continuous cellular structure. It is also shown that it is possible to combine and utilise extreme specific material characteristics from the individual foam core materials in the composite core by choosing a proper design.
