Controlled radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile, iron(III) chloride, and the reducing agent 1-acetyl-2-phenylhydrazine in dimethylformamide

摘要
The controlled radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate conducted via the atom-transfer mechanism in the presence of the AIBN-iron(III) chloride-DMF initiation system and 1-acetyl-2-phenylhydrazine as a reducing agent is investigated. The above system makes it possible to implement the pseudoliving mechanism of MMA polymerization, with the reaction-rate order with respect to the monomer concentration being equal to unity. The effective activation energy of MMA polymerization in the presence of the catalytic system under investigation is 41.8 kJ/mol. This value is more than 2.5 times lower than the activation energy of this process in the absence of 1-acetyl-2-phenylhydrazine, all other conditions being the same.
