It has been known for decades that the prevalence of multiple sclerosis shows an uneven distribution among different regions of the world and different populations. There are varying risk scenarios arising from geography, ethnics, gender and age. However, the issue of epidemiological studies in the past was partially limited due to methodological problems. Recent studies have figured out a more detailed pattern of spatial and temporal aspects of the prevalence and incidence of multiple sclerosis. Interpretations of these data point to both genetically and environmentally driven influences. This knowledge may provide new strategies for the prevention and treatment of multiple sclerosis in the future.
