At the time of conclusion of the Antarctic Treaty, the Parties focused more on the use of Antarctic resources; the Treaty itself does not place emphasis on environmental protection. Therefore other instruments had to be adopted, which focused on the protection of individual components of the environment and not on the environmental protection as a whole - Agreed Measures for the Conservation of Antarctic Fauna and Flora (1964), the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Seals (1972) and the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (1980). The article analyzes above mentioned international conventions as part of the Antarctic Treaty system.
