Sexual and urinary dysfunction after proctectomy with or without abdominoperineal resection: Incidence and treatment

As oncologic outcomes of rectal cancer treatment continue to improve, there has been an increased focus on the quality of life of survivors, including urinary and sexual function. Given its profound impact, it is imperative to have a better understanding of urogenital dysfunction in this context in order to advance new therapies and promote patient rehabilitation. Clinicians should focus on broad preoperative counseling and postoperative interventions to counterbalance the negative impact of surgery and radiotherapy. Clinicians should be aware that although rectal cancer may be cured, long-term treatment sequelae may persist. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
