Photoluminescence and its enhancement of Pr3+-doped BaTiO3 phosphor

We succeeded in developing a new praseodymium (Pr3+)-doped BaTiO3 phosphor with the addition of Mg, which exhibits a strong red emission, using a high-concentration sol-gel process in which the obtained gel was fired at 1200 degrees C for 2 h. The photoluminescence is due to intra-4f transitions of Pr3+, mainly from the excited states D-1(2) to the ground states of H-3(4). An approximately 60 fold enhancement of light emission in 0.1 mol% Pr-doped BaTiO3 was achieved by adding 0.5 mol% Mg. This emission enhancement is discussed on the basis of the increments of effective energy transfer between the overlapped absorption band of BaTiO3 and the 4f-5d band of Pr3+, and on the effective charge compensation by the addition of Mg.
