Ectopia cordis associated with multiple congenital anomalies. A report of two cases and review of literature

It is our objective to present two rare and interesting cases of ectopia cordis with multiple congenital anomalies, and demonstrates co-existing cardiac and non-cardiac abnormalities. This is the case of a four-day-old boy and a one-month-old girl with a rare congenital anomaly known as ectopia cordis. The two patients were born with the heart located outside the thoracic cavity, associated cardiac and non-cardiac anomalies were also noted. Though it cannot be prevented, it is recommended that regular prenatal check up, inclusive of ultrasound imaging and echocardiography to ensure the health of the mother and baby should be done. Early diagnosis by gross examination should be the rule, so that planning for immediate surgical interventions can be done. The outcome for both cases is fatal, despite modern treatment options. The causes are unknown and the pathogenesis unclear, but if we shed light on these matters, we become more aware of their existence and consequences.
