Ethics in University Libraries Users' Conformity Survey in University Libraries in Benue State, Nigeria

Ethics shape the way resources are provided, services are offered and judiciously utilized as well as behaviour or characters are molded. This study investigates the level of users' conformity with ethics with particular reference to university libraries in Benue State, Nigeria. The design of the study was descriptive survey. The population of the study is made up of 3,130 registered users of the three university libraries in Benue State. A total sample of 130 representing ten percent (10%) was chosen from each library using cluster sampling technique. Data were collected through self developed questionnaire and analyzed descriptively in the case of observation while frequencies and mean were used for the rest of the research questions. Results reveal that code of conducts such as prohibition of weapons e.g. knives, firearms etc, collection of fine from users who failed to return materials in their position as at when due, among others, are available. Users levels of conformity with failure to return any library material in users' position as at when due attracts fine, show your identity card among others, is very high. University libraries in the state respond to users' non-conformity with show your identity card on the entrance and prohibition of bags in the library among others to a very high extent. The study recommends that users of the libraries should therefore; conform to all available library ethics as they are responsible for guiding university libraries and providing a pleasant environment for the academic community in terms of teaching, learning and community services.
