The structure and thermal properties of Nd and Ce-doped Gd2Zr2O7 pyrochlore for nuclear waste forms

摘要
Pyrochlore-structured ceramics, which are candidate hosts for nuclear wastes, are sintered by using the solid-state reaction method at 1500 degrees C for 72 h in air. Gd2-xNdxZr2O7/Gd2Zr2-xCexO7 (0.0 <= x <= 2.0) compounds were investigated in respect of their overall performances. The phase structures of these compounds were identified by X-ray diffraction and their microstructures were observed by using SEM. Moreover, the thermal properties of these oxides were examined. In both kinds of solid solutions, all of the three observed objects increased with an increasing value of x from x = 0 to 2.0. The specific heat capacity of the two systems drew near, while the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal conductivity of Gd2-xNdxZr2O7 were relatively lower than those of Gd2Zr2-xCexO7.
