This article aims to present the first results of our postdoctoral research on the translations of Michel de Montaigne's Essays (1580-1582) into Brazilian Portuguese. Very little is known of the reception and trajectory of Montaigne's work in Brazil. However, such lack of knowledge contrasts with the fact that the Essays are widely known and much appreciated by the Brazilian public. Proof of that is the vitality of academic research on Montaigne in the fields of philosophy, literature and social sciences as well as the innumerable appropriations of the Essays in the media and in the arts in general. Which Montaigne first arrived in Brazil, how and when? These are the questions that we seek to answer as we delve into the course of the translations of Montaigne's Essays in Brazil.
