Infrared optical properties of heterogeneous YBCO materials near the orientational percolation threshold

A discussion of the infrared optical properties of heterogeneous materials is given in the large- and small-grain limit. The effective permittivity and the pseudo-permittivity of sintered and micro-twinned YBCO compounds (YBa2Cu3O7 and YBa2Cu4O8) have been measured by means of ellipsometry. The influence of orientational ordering and the optical threshold on the permittivity components has been calculated. It is demonstrated that dissipation, oblate grain-shape, and dipole-dipole interaction tend to lower the plasma frequency in samples that mix conducting and insulating axes.
