Solid state electrochemical properties of electroactive solutes in polyurethane ionomer media

Cyclic voltammetry of ferrocene in polyethylene oxide polyurethane ionomer films was measured with microdisk electrodes at different temperatures. The cyclic voltammetric curve showed stability and reiteration. The electrode reaction of CpFeCp in polyurethane ionomer media is irreversible. The potential of the cathodic peak does not shift significantly with temperature within the range fi om room temperature to 70 degrees C. The peak current values increase with increasing measurement temperature. The temperature dependence of the ferrocene diffusion coefficient is a straight line compared with that of ionic conductivity. In comparing the changes of peak currents and conductivity, it was found that the tendency is analogous, but the shape of the two curves is quite different. The two mechanisms exhibit distinctive activation energies. The method of solid state voltammetric measurement with microdisk Electrodes has potential use in studying the conduction mechanism of polymer electrolytes.
