Evidence of Superparamagnetism in Mg0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 Nanosized Ferrite

Nanosized Mg0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 spinel ferrite was produced via a glycol-thermal route from high-purity metal chlorides. X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope were used to investigate the structure and morphology of the compound. The results show formation of single-phase structure with average particle size of about 8.6 nm. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and mesopore volume was found to be 86.9 and 0.21 cm(3)g(-1) respectively. The evolution of the magnetic properties as a function of measuring temperature was investigated by using a cryogen-free measurement of vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) system. The results indicate a superparamagnetic behaviour of the sample. The results also show the coercive field, saturation and remanent magnetizations, experimental magnetic moment and squareness of the loops increased with decreasing temperatures.
