Glass matrix composites were developed as alternative materials for the immobilization of plutonium-bearing nuclear legacy waste. These composites were composed of a lead-containing glass matrix incorporating lanthanum zirconate pyrochlore particle in concentrations up to 30 vol.-%. The composites exhibit a homogeneous distribution of isolated lanthanum zirconate particles in the glass matrix, strong bonding of the particles to the matrix, and very low porosity.
