A novel organic-inorganic hybrid compound (C9H14N)(2)PbCl4 was grown via a solution-cooling process by employing the organic cation-2,4,6-trimethylaniline to control the hybrid compound and the structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to be monoclinic, P2(1)/c with a =24.350(0) angstrom, b = 25.167(0) angstrom, c = 7.694(0) angstrom, beta = 95.77(9)degrees, and Z = 8. The compound adopted an unprecedented structure, which was built with the staircase-like 1-D chains of PbCl4 octahedra sandwiched with the square pyramids of PbCl5. Raman and infrared spectra were used to gain more information of the title compound. The hybrid compound showed the photoluminescence emission at 424 nm. (c) 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS.
