Anonymous nuclear markers for halfbeak fishes of the genus Hemirhamphodon

We developed ten single-copy anonymous nuclear polymorphic loci (SCNPs) molecular markers from the Southeast Asian freshwater livebearing halfbeak fish Hemirhamphodon pogonognathus. Ninety-six clones from a genomic library were examined, and 37 potential loci were tested across several species of Hemirhamphodon, and in the related halfbeak Dermogenys pusilla. All 10 loci reported here amplified successfully in four putative species of Hemirhamphodon, but only one amplified in D. pusilla. An average of 57 SNPs per kilobase were identified (total of 4,462 bp sequenced per individual). The markers documented here provide a useful resource for ongoing investigations into the biogeographical history of SouthEast Asia, and the population genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships of Hemirhamphodon halfbeaks.
