摘要：
This report describes: 1) the principles behind the artificial anal sphincter; 2) its implantation technique, including a discussion of the standard implantation procedure by perianal incision and transvaginal approach; 3) the results of a literature review analyzing multicentre and single-centre studies, including clinical results, early and late morbidity, manometric results, and functional results regarding anal continence and rectal emptying difficulties; and 4) the current indications for the procedure.
