摘要
Evidence-based contemporary terminology is presented so that nurse practitioners (NPs) can choose respectful and empowering words to ameliorate stigma and health disparities faced by vulnerable populations. Person-first language is advocated, with some exceptions noted where identity-first language may be preferable. Replacing judgmental and derogatory terms with objective, respectful, nonjudgmental language is recommended. A shift toward framing language as empowering promotes a sense of partnership and optimism. Terminology is constantly changing over time as human experiences evolve and societal views shift, necessitating that NPs stay current regarding language use. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc.
