Effects of biaxial ordering in thin films of ferroelectric liquid crystals

摘要
The effect of induced biaxial ordering on the behavior of ferroelectric liquid-crystal films has been studied in the vicinity of the smectic A-smectic C* phase transition. It is established that the experimental characteristics of the films are complicated functions of the film parameters, an external electric field, and temperature. It is also shown that the effect of the surface can be taken into account within the model of surface tension. Some specific features of the anomalous behavior of the films are interpreted theoretically. The allowance for biaxiality and surface effects provided the solution of the problem of film behavior in the vicinity of the bending point of the polarization curve.
