When pets are sick, pet owners assume that medicines are readily available and trust that veterinarians will know which drugs to prescribe. When faced with certain pathologic disorders, it can be disheartening to realize that no treatments exist. It also can befrustrating to learn that the available supportive therapies may not alleviate signs or stop the progression of the disorder. Why don't remedies exist for certain disease processes when so many treatment options are available for other disorders? The answers can be found when you examine the journey a new drug takes - from the development laboratory to a pet's medicine cabinet.
