fThe requirements, layout and expected performance of the ATLAS Inner Detector are presented. An overview of the ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker (SCT) is given, concentrating on the system aspects. Particular attention is given to the development and prototyping of the detector modules, support structures, power distribution and grounding/shielding scheme, cooling, survey and alignment systems. Results of the system tests, and the assembly and integration scenarios are briefly discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
