The upgraded Arecibo telescope will provide unique opportunities for measurement of the Zeeman effect in molecular lines and hence for augmenting the meager data currently available about the role of magnetic fields in the evolution of dense interstellar clouds and in the star formation process. This paper presents the rational for Zeeman observations, gives a brief summary of the current observational situation, and discusses Zeeman observations with the Arecibo telescope.
