The Rochester Arc & Flame Center was established in New York City, US, to offer students courses in welding, the glass arts, and blacksmithing. The center offered several introductory, intermediate, advanced, and professional programs. All costs, including safety gear, class materials, and consumables, were covered in the course price. The center had courses available in gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), oxyfuel and plasma cutting, and metal sculpture. The welding shop had 16 booths and each station contained a new GMAW, GTAW, and SMAW machine. Other equipment included plasma cutting machines, CNC plasma table, ironworking device, band and abrasive chop saws, grinding and measuring tools, and clamps. Creative students fabricated metal sculptures, such as hexagon shapes welded together as abstract art, small bracket-shaped pieces tacked in a long spiral design and a miniature building.
