The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) aboard the European remote sensing satellites (ERS-1 and ERS-2) acquire images which are used in this study to derive ocean surface winds. The wind speed is computed by the C-band model (CMOD4), which was developed for the wind scatterometer (SCAT) operating at the same wave length. Wind fields from ERS-1/2 SAR images are presented for several geographical locations and compared to ground truth measurements. The ERS-1 SAR image of the island Rugen in the Baltic Sea is compared to results of the mesoscale wind model GESIMA. Errors due to uncertainty in wind direction are computed for various wind conditions. The error in wind speed caused by saturation of the analogue to digital convertor leading to a power loss of the ERS SAR data are estimated. Problems of the recalibration algorithm in case of inhomogeneous images, for instance in coastal zones, are presented. This work presents first results of the ESB SARPAK project (AO2D113).
