Photochemical oxidation of sulfur dioxide

The effect of irradiation of a gas mixture flow containing sulfur dioxide formed by carbon sulfide combustion in air by a mercury lamp is studied experimentally. The electric power of the radiation source does not exceed 60 W. As the current through the lamp increases, so does the optical density of the gas in the W spectral range (250-340 nm) which is attributed to an increase in concentration of the condensed phase in the gas mixture. According to estimates derived from measured attenuation of radiation at a wavelength of 334.1 nm, the concentration of the condensed phase increases four- or five-fold as the current rises from 0 to 0.12 A.
