摘要
To know what mehanism governs the sliding wear of solids, the authors carry out an experimental study on virgin/virgin surface rubbing using a rotating cross-cylinders wear machine with both herical rubbing track. If the mechanism of wear is one of cutting, surface damages must be observed and wear particles (cutting chips) are produced even in the virgin/virgin rubbing. If wear is governed by adhesion of sliding materials. no wear particles would be generated but only mutual material transfer must be observed. If wear is caused by a fatigue fracture of the surface portion, neither surface damage nor wear particle formation would occur in the virgin/virgin rubbing system. Fxperimantal results show that the fundamental mechanism of wear is adhesion of mating materials.
