摘要
It has been broadly claimed that the adoption of open source software holds the promise of significant savings in terms of the total cost of ownership (TCO). While it seems as though decisions to adopt open source should be simple to make, significant barriers to its adoption exist. This article reports a case study that was performed at a small, regional university regarding both quantifiable and intangible costs and benefits of migration to open source software. It contains lessons learned from a study of a variety of factors pertaining to the feasibility of a large-scale migration. It contains conclusions regarding the rather considerable individual and institutional resistance that might greet such initiatives. This resistance arises even in the face of evidence that adoption of open Source software might have a variety of quite favorable long-term impacts.
