摘要
In order to understand the fracture process of ultrasonically cutting through a brittle material a finite element analysis has been performed. The stress state at the crack tip was analysed by numerical determination of the stress intensity factor for a three-dimensional crack loaded on its faces by displacements corresponding to the modal amplitudes of the excited blade. For two vibrational modes of interest the results indicate that the stress intensity factor increases when the blade is nearer the crack tip. This fracture mechanics' approach allows an assessment to be made of the optimum cutting performance between the two modes and the conclusions drawn agree with observations made during earlier cutting trials.
