The inverse Faraday effect in plasmas produced by circularly polarized laser light in the range of intensities 109-1014 W/cm2

Measurements of the axial magnetic field produced during the interaction of circularly polarized laser light with plasma are reported. The experiments were performed with a circularly polarized Nd:YAG laser, with a wavelength of 1.06 mu m and a pulse duration of 7 ns, in a range of irradiances from 10(9) to 10(14) W/cm(2). Axial magnetic fields from 500 G up to 2.17 MG were measured. Up to 5 x 10(13) W/cm(2) the results are in agreement with a nonlinear model of the inverse Faraday effect dominated by the ponderomotive force. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
