Formation of cyclic oligomer during the polycondensation of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate

摘要
Cyclic oligomer generated during the polycondensation of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate(BHET) leading to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was investigated by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The distribution of cyclic oligomer components was not changed with the polycondensation time except cyclic dimer. It was found from the relation of the content of individual cyclic oligomer and the reciprocal degree of polymerization(DP) that cyclic oligomer was generated at DP of about 13 similar to 14 and increased to an equilibrium at DP of ca 40. From the relationship between DP and the content of cyclic oligomer, it is found that the thermodynamic equilibrium could be reached after a long time.
