This paper reports the use of simulation to perform rapid prototyping of advanced control and display technologies (direct voice input, 3-dimensional sound and helmet mounted display) for fast-jet aircraft. By integrating the new prototypic systems into a research simulator and making rapid changes to the direct voice input, experienced pilots were able to use the systems in simulated flight, gaining insights into, and providing expert comments on their future application.. The rapid-prototyping approach was shown to be useful in establishing how the technologies might be employed in future cockpit systems.
