In the present study we analysed the evolution of psalms in the Romanian literature. We focussed on the work of three most important poets who have contributed to the modernization of this poetical form. Dosoftei was a metropolitan bishop from the mediaeval times, a very learned man whose work is remarkable because of his skill in making verses, and his ability in adapting a foreign text to the specific of our literature. Tudor Arghezi is an excellent psalmist of the 20th century who had a huge imaginative power. Doinas belongs to the beginning of the postmodern era. Unlike the mediaeval Ages, when in the poetic imaginary there was a direct communication between Heaven and Earth, in the post nietzschean times, the poets suffer from the bitterness caused by the tragic condition of man who has to live in an deserted place where God withdrew from the world.
