Economic growth and agrifood import performance of emerging economies and Next-11

The study uses the theoretical and empirical frameworks developed in Haq and Meilke (2009, 2010) to estimate the effect of economic growth in lower-income (LI), middle-income (MI) and high-income (HI) economies, the emerging markets (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and the Next-11 countries on global agrifood imports. Trade data for 20 agrifood products for the years 1997 to 2006 is used. These products are categorized into seven agrifood product sectors: meat, dairy products, cereals, vegetables, fruits, tea and coffee and oilseeds. Results show that growth in demand for agrifood products imports in emerging markets outpaced growth in their income while the income effects of Next-11 are similar to other LI countries.
