tn this study plasma levels of protein SH-groups and free radical scavengers as well as the activities of plasma and red blood cell antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase. GPX, and superoxide dismutase, SOD) were studied in patients with esential hypertension(EH). The results obtained, have shown that thiol group levels. were not altered in hypertensive patients. However, the plasma concentrations of non-enzymatic free radical scavengers were lower than the corresponding values in the control group. The lowering of free radical scavengers in EH was accompanied with increased activities of extracellular SOD and GPS. On the other hand, significant alterations in the red blood cell antioxidant activity in hypertensive patients were found. This change was due to the fall in the activities of both GPX and SOD. We propose that the lowering of red blood cell antioxidant activity in hypertensive patients may contribute to the increased oxidative damage in EH.
