摘要
Neutralization processes during the interaction of slow (4 keV), highly charged Arq+ ions (6 less than or equal to q less than or equal to 15) incident on a Au(lll) surface were investigated by energy and charge analysis of ions scattered at 75 degrees. It was found that the majority of scattered Ar ions (about 75%) were neutralized even when scattered from single atoms at the surface. When the Ar ions carry initial L-shell vacancies, the yield of multiply charged scattered ions (MCSI) increases by about 3 orders of magnitude. By a model simulation of the surface interaction, this strong shell-effect can be attributed to incomplete filling of inner shell vacancies by electron capture and Auger transitions.
