摘要：

The Integrated Mail Processor (IMP) is an advanced mail processing machine that combines a culler-facer-canceller, a video coding system and a sorting system. How can this advanced technology be integrated into an evolving mails pipeline? By the use of IMP Operating Modes which this paper discusses in several ways. Firstly, what they are and what can be done with them, and how they been used to change the IMP from full functionality in use to simply stamp cancelling. Secondly the cost of this flexibility, and finally, how a configurable machine should play a major part of mail processing machine development.
