摘要
This essay explores the prenatal ultrasound session as a stage for biotourist performances. Ultrasound sonographers effectively transform the fetus into an entertaining baby, the uterus into a loving, nurturing home, and clients into parents and families. Biotourist performances are discussed in light of three performances: conventional, cynical or post-tourist, and resistant. Attention is paid to gender performativity and the playful, stereotypical assignment of sex that unfolds during the ultrasound session. The author concludes that prospective parents rehearse conventional scripts upon this stage directed by the midwife or sonographer.
