Comparing and evaluating the voltage regulation of a UPFC and STATCOM

In recent years it has been illustrated that the installation position of a Unified power flow controller (UPFC) has an important effect on its overall performance. A pulse width modulation (PWM) based UPFC used as a voltage regulator is modeled and analyzed to investigate its optimal position in the transmission line. This is compared with STATic COMpensator (STATCOM) device. This paper deals with the definition and simulation of the steady-state performance of the UPFC and STATCOM when they operate as a terminal voltage regulator. From the simulation results it is demonstrated that by varying the modulation index of the two devices it can control the distribution of active and reactive power flows. Furthermore, the comparisons for the optimum operation for the two devices have been performed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
