Extraction and characterization of oil from the seed of Sesbania sesban Linn shrubs

摘要
The seed of Sesbania sesban Linn was examined for its moisture and oil content. The oil content of the seed extracted with 40/60 petroleum ether in a Soxhlet apparatus was 4.6%. Some physical and chemical characteristics of the oil were determined and were comparable with recommended International Coder Standards; i.e. acid value = 8.1, iodine value = 143.1, saponification value = 183.7. However, the oil was found to go rancid during 6 months storage and it contained traces of cyanide. patty acids detectable by gas liquid chromatographic analysis were Oleic = 87.4%, palmitic = 10.8%, Caprylic = 0.4% and Caproic = 0.8%.
