摘要
External beam radiation therapy is an effective method of treating cancer in which the lesion is irradiated with high-energy X-ray beams. The first step in accurate delivery of radiation is accurate positioning of patient on the treatment table. Typically, reference images from the planning systems are matched with portal images acquired during patient setup prior to treatment. Matching of anatomical landmarks between the reference images and the portal images is attempted for patient positioning. This method has a number of shortcomings that influence the accuracy of patient positioning. We are proposing the use of Mega-Voltage Cone Beam CT (MVCT) acquired at the treatment time for patient positioning. The MVCT may be compared and matched with the planning CT for accurate determination of patient offset. We have demonstrated that acquisition of MVCT may be done with delivering a few Monitor Units (MU). (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
