(Chemical Equation Presented) Make it quick! The oxygen isotope 15O has a half-life of only 2 min, and was incorporated into a sugar through an ultrarapid radical hydroxylation of 2,6-dideoxy-6-iodo-D-glucose with labeled molecular oxygen to provide 6-[15O]-2-deoxy-D-glucose (see scheme). The product accumulates in metabolically active organs of rats similarly to a 18F-based tracer in common use, and represents a promising alternative for medical imaging. © 2005 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
