The ternary complexes of stoichiometries [M(oda)(Bipy)H2O]center dot xH(2)O [M = Cu (1), x = 4; Co (2), x = 2; Ni (3), x = 4 or Cr (4), x = 3] and [VO(oda)(Bipy)]center dot 2H(2)O (5), where H(2)oda = oxydiacetic acid and Bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, were prepared and characterized employing elemental, FAB-Mass, FT-IR, EPR, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopic analyses. X-ray crystallography of (1) and (5) indicated a six coordinate distorted geometry. The antimicrobial activities of the complexes were investigated against Escherichia coli (k-12), Bacillus subtilis (MTC-121). Staphylococcus aureus (IOASA-22). Salmonella typhymurium (MTCC-98), Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium marneffei. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic activity of the Cu(II) complex (1) was assessed employing NBT assay. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
